On Saturday, June 1st, 2019,  volunteers with Cru City Austin gathered in SE Austin to have fun and give back to our community.

Cru City Austin sponsored a service project to support Texas Reach Out, a local non-profit organization that provides transitional housing for men and women recently released from prison.

These ex-offenders desperately need a positive, safe place to live while they get their lives back in order. TRO provides housing, meals, life skills training, job counseling and spiritual encouragement for these men and women who are ready to change their life course. www.texasreachout.org

We had over 50 people volunteer who gave four hours on a Saturday to work on one of the TROM homes and storage shed.

  • We divided the painters into two teams of about 15 each.  They were competing to put TWO COATS of paint on the house in less than 4 hours.

  • Another team of 8 or 10 were tasked with landscaping the front yard to create a more welcoming, beautiful home.

  • We also had non-painting jobs like sorting and distributing clothes and paint “helpers.” And of course, supervisors!

  • Volunteers were invited to donate toward the cost of the paint, supplies and preparation costs if possible.  We also had a Facebook page asking for donations.  In all, funds were raised to totally cover the costs!

  • Lunch and snacks were provided (lunch was courtesy of Smokie Mo’s!).

The event was a very special time for all involved, and a great blessing for the clients who are presently or will be staying in the home in the future.
